Can a diagnosis of osteoporosis be reversed?

Please, join with me on my journey to find out...

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the bones become porous and fragile, making fractures from minimal trauma a real risk. It is caused by depletion of calcium and bone protein.

A bone mineral density test (BMD) is used to make a diagnosis. This test takes between 15-30 minutes and is a non-intrusive, painless procedure.

This condition is recognised as an aged population disease and the highest incidence of it is found in post-menopausal women.

Research has discovered that not just one thing can be identified as the cause of osteoporosis. There are a number of factors that when stacked upon each other can create the situation known as "the straw that breaks the camel's back" and can give rise to a diagnosis of lowered bone density. These factors have been well researched and identified by the Osteoporosis Education Project (OEP). For further information on osteoporosis this is an excellent starting point.

The following list of bone depleting factors have been taken from the OEP website and have been put in bullet point for your convenience:-

  • drugs;
  • acid/alkaline imbalance;
  • tubal ligation;
  • history of dieting;
  • inadequate peak bone mass;
  • underweight;
  • nutritional deficiency;
  • caffeine;
  • no exercise;
  • high protein;
  • low calcium;
  • poor bone repair;
  • junk food;
  • hysterectomy;
  • sugar;
  • high fats;
  • early menopause;
  • weak digestion;
  • weak adrenals;
  • irregular periods;
  • stress;
  • ovary removal;
  • tobacco;
  • alcohol; and
  • endocrine imbalance.
  • Some other factors of interest are:-

  • Paralysis - People who live with paralysis may also be at risk of osteoporosis.
  • Drugs - The prolonged use of certain drugs can be connected to this condition - such as corticosteroids.

  • Weak digestion - A theory being put forward is that one of the contributing factors to weak digestion is the presence of parasites in the bowel. It is said that the parasites provoke an environment of malabsorption of nutrients which can be linked to many illnesses - bone loss being one of them.

    There are natural medicine preparations on the market that will assist with purging parasites from the bowel. These preparations should include herbs such as wormwood, mugwort, white walnut and pau d'arco.

    My bone density challenge!

    In less than 6 years, my bone density dropped from normal range BMD to osteoporosis.

    In the last two years, my BMD went from mild osteopenia (lower than normal bone density and at risk) to developing osteoporosis. I was disappointed to hear this news.

    In doing my research for this page, I was stunned to learn about how many bone depleting factors I can put a strike against. They are:

  • acid/alkaline imbalance;
  • underweight (at times);
  • nutritional deficiency (irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis, benign bowel tumour and benign polyp - now being managed well);
  • caffeine (tea and coffee);
  • little or no exercise (now undergoing a transformation);
  • low side of normal calcium;
  • hysterectomy at 32 years;
  • early menopause surgical at 40 years;
  • weak digestion (most of my life - now being managed well);
  • weak adrenals (chronic fatigue most of my life - now being managed well);
  • stress (varying degrees of);
  • ovary removal (at 40 years - one had a benign tumour, the other a multi-chambered cyst);
  • endocrine imbalance (probably all my life) (4 thyroid diseases - Hashimoto's, Plummers, multi-nodular goite and cancer at 40).
  • I have a confession. I didn't take this situation seriously until January 2007 when my doctor said to me "I am concerned about your bone mineral density loss. You have two choices - (1) drugs or (2) exercise."

    I was delighted when I heard option (2).

    There was a BUT - to reverse my diagnosis of osteoporosis - I had to be rigorous in my dedication to the program.

    I've accepted the challenge to reverse my diagnosis. My 12 month goal is to become totally healthy with perfect bone density.
