What is meditation really?
Meditation has been defined in many ways, but a common thread is present in all definitions ie., spiritual life or spirituality. It certainly propelled me into an amazing
spiritual journey
in which I have experienced the ecstatic highs and dark lows of self-discovery.
In my opinion, it is:
a discipline of contemplation - whether it be via a mantra, a guru-murti (a specially selected picture of a guru), an object or simply by observing the breath - which brings the mind, body and soul into harmony;
a means used to explore the unseen and unknown mystery of the world;
a technique to create healing and miracles; and
an adventure into your own personal and private playground.
Consequently, with NO rules, boundaries or limitations - through this activity, creative and spontaneous visualization can effect real changes in every area of ones life. This is the key to what you will learn on this website.
Some other organizations offer the following descriptions:-www.en.wikipedia.org - ... [it] usually refers to a state in which the body is consciously relaxed and the mind is allowed to become calm and focused. Several major religions include ritual meditation; however, ...[it] need not be a religious or spiritual activity. Most of the more popular systems ... are of Eastern origin ... and, it also goes on to say - "... [that] as a form of alternative medicine [it] brings about mental calmness and physical relaxation by suspending the stream of thoughts that normally occupy the mind. Generally performed once or twice a day for approximately 20 minutes at a time, meditation is used to reduce stress, alter hormone levels, and elevate one's mood."
www.theredeemer.ca ... a spiritual discipline that encourages the participant to go more deeply into their relationship with God through a variety of exercises and prayer techniques.
www.inneraccess101.com Any of various disciplines of mind and body that enable one to achieve higher states of consciousness; it is a tool for self-improvement, creative renewal and spiritual growth.
www.kera.org A variety of techniques for some individuals that may or may not incorporate spirituality which can calm and soothe as well as provide insight.
www.womensheartfoundation.org - "A means of focusing the mind to reduce or eliminate conscious thought, to bring the mind to stillness or rest."
www.thebuddhistsociety.org - "Development of the mind leading to awareness, tranquillity and wisdom."
Although, it is primarily a discipline of Eastern religion, meditation is being acknowledged widely in the Western world as an acceptable, and often necessary, discipline to cope with the stresses of living in our fast moving society. As the 21st century unfolds, people are more curious about spirituality and are intent upon discovering It for themselves.
There is a rising movement in Western society away from materialism towards spirituality in all walks of life.
Meditation
is the natural way to explore this curiosity and need. Meditation is one healing modality you can successfully do to help yourself. But there are many other ways you can help yourself. Explore
Our Healing Hub
to find some other ways that would suit you.
