What you need to know to Learn Meditation

Taking the step to learn meditation is the best decision you can make to take care of your whole self.

Meditation is a discipline focused primarily on the breath and has been used for thousands of years to balance the mind, body and soul.

Although the benefits of meditation are spreading around the world, when you begin to learn meditation you are embarking on a journey that can be filled with fears of the unknown, or feelings of inadequacy.

The most important thing to remember is to not compare your experiences with those of others. You are a unique individual and will therefore have unique experiences. These are personal and not a reflection of what is right or wrong, better or worse.

Do you want to do a unique healing meditation now.

Top 7 Questions Beginners ask about Meditation

1. What is meditation really?

2. What sort of things could I experience?
  • Peacefulness
  • Stillness
  • Thoughts floating through your mind
  • Rest
  • Conscious of energy
  • Balance in daily life
  • Purpose in life
  • Ecstasy / bliss
  • Resting in blackness
  • Phenomena
  • OR

  • Nothing

3. Will I see or feel anything?

Perhaps. About 75% (or maybe slightly higher) of people who meditate will experience visions or bodily sensations. There are some who cannot see or feel tangibly - but to my knowledge, everyone experiences something - whether it be phenomena, colours, visions, just a knowing, or peace and tranquility.

Understanding creative visualisation will also help answer this question.

4. And if I do see or feel anything and it is frightening, what should I do?

If you do have a frightening experience:-

  • immediately ask for protection from God, the Higher Source, the Universal Source, the Divine Intelligence - whatever you feel comfortable with; or
  • visualise yourself surrounded by glowing crosses or golden light; or
  • repeat a mantra; or
  • leave the meditation.

It is unusual to have a frightening experience.

Particularly with creative visualisation and healing meditations, I recommend that you say a prayer of protection at the beginning of each "sit" and visualise or imagine you have passed through a golden ball or golden shower at the beginning and end of each meditation.

This is the prayer of protection that I have used for many years which was taught to me by my first psychic teacher, Marilyn O'Sullivan:-

"In the name of Jesus Christ, I call upon the Spirits of Light to stand guard at the doorway of my soul and to guide me in the ways of truth, love and light and to protect me from the forces of darkness and deception. Amen."

I believe protection should be used every time you meditate not only during the phase when you learning meditation.

5. What if I can't feel or see anything, does this mean I can't do it?

Absolutely not! If you can sit quietly, and simply focus on your breath for 5 minutes, you are "doing it"; and, will have therapeutic benefits from "doing it". Everyone can do this, and after you master this, you can learn meditation in other meditation styles.

If there is a secret to this discipline, I would say, that it is to be able to let the body and mind relax for a time - and to let all thoughts drift through the mind without giving them any attention.

6. How will I know if I am really meditating?

When you begin to learn meditation it is easy to doubt your ability to meditate. As with any new skill, it takes practice and the more you practice the better you become. It also depends on the type of meditation you are doing as to how long it takes before you feel successful.

Once you understand the concept of creative visualisation - you will be able to all of the meditations on this site with ease.

The tangible benefits you experience in your day to day life will be an indication that you are successfully meditating. It could be one or all of the following:

  • rejuvenation;
  • more balanced;
  • more energy;
  • increased libido;
  • harmony;
  • improved connection with the world;
  • unexplained happiness;
  • joy;
  • reconnection with self.

When you are really meditating you are in what is called the "alpha state". Free script and free Alpha entrainment MP3 for accessing the alpha state of mind.

7. Are there different types?

Yes. Different techniques have been identified, but the common denominator is the focus on the breath. Some are listed below.

  • religion
  • creative visualisation;
  • healing;
  • conscious breathing;
  • observation - non attachment.
